PD Dr. Martina Müller-Wiener
‘Islamic Archaeology and the Museum – Tracing the Past and Current Challenges’
Archaeological Centre, Brugsch-Pascha-Saal – 4th Floor
Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 6, 10117 Berlin
The emergence of Islamic Archaeology as an academic discipline is closely intertwined with the development of museum collections, and the Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin has played a distinguished role in this history. Over time, however, the growing professionalisation and specialisation of both museum practice and archaeological research have gradually shifted what was once a close relationship. This lecture sets out to trace those connections and takes stock of where things stand today: What role does Islamic Archaeology play in contemporary exhibition practice – and in the function of museums as research institutions?
