Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art 

We and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung cordially invite you to the event "Main Identity Characteristic Islam? When private faith becomes a political matter..." on 4 March 2020 at 6 p.m. in the Mshatta Hall of the Museum for Islamic Art.

No other religion is more under observation in Germany than Islam. Those who place themselves in this religious community seem to be under permanent pressure to explain and assert themselves. The private view of religion is becoming a political issue: whether it is the ban on headscarves, Islamist terror, forced marriages or anti-Semitism - what role does religion, your religion, play? Often a name or a family origin from the Islamic cultural area is sufficient for the classification as Muslim or Muslim woman. The actually lived faith or non-belief plays only a subordinate role.

What follows from this finding for public discussions on Islam-related questions? Are other religious communities also under a comparable obligation to justify themselves? How important is religion for one's own identity and in public? What possibilities exist to make the diverse presence of Muslim life in Germany better known? We would like to talk to you about these questions and have invited interesting input from science, politics and society.
