Tandem-Sofa // Provenance research and Islamic art

06 May 2024

Dear friends of the Museum for Islamic Art, dear guests,

We cordially invite you to our sixth Tandem Sofa on 6 May 2024 at 6:30pm.

On the initiative of and in collaboration with the research project "Reconstruction of the Felix Ganz (1869-1944) Art Collection" at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the Museum for Islamic Art, together with the Central Archive of the National Museums in Berlin, organised the world's first workshop entitled: Acquisitions and Provenances of Islamic Art between 1933 and 1945 in Berlin in autumn 2023. Scholars and curators from numerous institutions intensively discussed current projects and relevant results, thus creating important foundations for future networking and cooperation. Ahead of the publication of the conference proceedings, two of the organisers present the results of the October 2023 workshop and would like to thank the Circle of Friends for their support.

Dr Miriam Kühn, curator at the Museum for Islamic Art, and Nathalie Neumann, M.A., provenance researcher at the Institute of Art History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, enter into conversation. They will shed light on the provenance history of selected artefacts and take a look at collectors and collections that were unlawfully expropriated, looted or auctioned off under National Socialism. Against the background of the Washington Principles, they explain how academia on the one hand and museums on the other deal with this legacy.

Dr Miriam Kühn and Nathalie Neumann, M.A.
