BASIC WORKSHOP
Textile Wet Cleaning: Three-Day Workshop
23rd–25th January 2017 • Berlin, Germany
Goals/ Scope:
During the first day of this introductory three-day workshop, participants will be presented with a review of basic aqueous cleaning techniques or strategies for textile substrates. The notion of generally ‘isotonic’ bathing fabric structures that are wet cleanable will be introduced. By the end of the first day, both pH and conductivity measurements on textile surfaces, as well as the construction of simple buffered and chelate-containing bathing systems that reconcile with ‘object- based’ measurements will be accomplished. Both Agarose and Xanthan Gum will be discussed as simple aqueous gelling materials for ‘spot’ treatments or stain removal will be discussed. Surfactant chemistry and oxidation-reduction chemistry will be reviewed on the morning of Day 2, with the goal in mind of adding functionality to a basic array of aqueous cleaning methods. On Day 3, emulsion and micro-emulsions for blending solvent and water cleaning systems together for both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ cleaning needs, including the cleaning of water sensitive materials will be discussed.
Practical Information
Duration: Three days from Monday 23th January to Wednesday 25th January 2017
Time: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm, snacks and beverages will be provided
Location: Museum für Islamische Kunst – Archäologisches Zentrum, Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 6, D - 10117 Berlin
Language: The language of instruction will be English
Number of participants: Maximum 15
Registration fee: 450 €
Target group: Registration is open to textile conservators and restorers
Requirements: Basic notions of chemistry are recommended
Deadline for application: 23rd October 2016
Applications will be accepted by order of entry until the class is full
ADVANCED WORKSHOP
Textile Wet Cleaning: Two-Day Workshop
27th–28th January 2017 • Berlin, Germany
Goals/ Scope:
During this two-day workshop, participants will be presented with a range of cleaning gel types that might be used for specific textile cleaning problems. These ‘forms’ will include a review of appropriate aqueous gelling materials, emulsion forming gels of both the ‘o/w’ and ‘w/o’ type, and solvent gelling methods. The initial goal of the workshop is to help better match the cleaning ‘form’ with the types of materials to be removed. The initial day lectures will be largely a review for those participants who have taken the introductory cleaning workshop or an equivalent. The second day lecture will tend to focus on what might be termed ‘dry cleaning’ methods based on ‘w/o’ emulsion type systems. These lectures and practical sessions will focus on the use of silicone based solvents as both ‘hold out’ as well as emulsion forming materials to facilitate cleaning on water sensitive fibers/structures/or design materials.
